This movie has powerful content, but I think the actual situation was probably a lot less "neat." I'm sure they were most likely dirty, exhausted, beat down, and tired. The actors all look too clean, the German singer's hair and uniform is too perfect, there is a woman at the front (did that even happen?) and it all seems a little to clean and orderly. No man's land was full of land mines, barbed wire, dead bodies, cesspools, and rotten decay. Great movie, but realism is a great thing too.

@Mr2ndAmendment The singer and the woman are not footmen, they were actually people visiting the soldier to increase their moral

I figured they were probably a rarity, it seems so hard to believe that a woman like that would be allowed to get in the trenches with the soldiers. I still think it's a great movie, but I think they definitely (for better or worse) left out a lot of the details. This movie makes everyone question the notion that their enemy is completely evil. I can't imagine celebrating Christmas like this, then going back to fighting the next morning, fighting the guys that you met and socialized with.

hence the premise of the movie. "Are you going to open fire after an apertif?" but yes, the woman in the trenches... was a bit much for me. after all, Marlene Detrich never got THAT close to the MLR in '44.

In this respect you might consider lost virtues like honour, loyalty, courage and dedication; qualities common once, but now rare..

remember, it is a dramatization of events of the winter of 1914. remember, most days in the trenches were 23h59m of boredom, and 1m of sheer horror...

"most days in the trenches were 23h59m of boredom, and 1m of sheer horror"
There is some truth in this. Yet if you read soldiers' diaries, you realize that they had much to do, not just getting bored, between combats or patrols. Much misery, for sure. During 4 years, most European youths lived materially like tramps.
