we are somewhere between a Democratic and a Constitutional republic.
Constitututional Republic serves the State, Democratic Republic serves the people. As far as Americans are concerned, the Gov protects the people's rights, but things like the Patriot Act have revoked some of those rights, but thats a Presidents War Power. In any case, We are seeing more and more proof that our reps care more about the State than the people, so you are in part correct, but they should look after the people

"To the Republic" refers to Republican Virtues (not modern Republicanism) that were in place from the Romans. (ex: State over self)
The US is actually a Democratic Republic. We the PEOPLE elect out Representatives who are supposed to act on behalf of we the People, in order to form a more perfect union etc ... preamble.
And SPiderzumbie^^, why the hell do you think China is a Republic? The People's Republic of China is not a real country, China = Communism, u can only vote for teh commy party.
