err.. Abbey Road is incredible, while being less ground breaking Rubber Soul is pretty awesome too.

You're right, the Beatles were front and center to one of the greatest movements in Popular culture, the late 60s .After years of making 3 minute pop songs they made Revolver and that changed everything. But they only had a few great albums, the White Album, (and only parts of it), was their last. Whereas Radiohead is something else entirely. Fifteen years together and they're still breaking new ground. There's really no band to compare to them in my opinion.
...the greatest?
...who can say.

@timages13 yes yes i know, that's why I put down radiohead is better instrumentally- because George Martin came up with a lot of the orchestration. The Beatles were definitely experimental though, and for the user before to say there was no progression through the beatles is crazy

Very true, Tomorrow Never knows for 66' is astounding, as their other songs especially by John Lennon. Yet a good part of the Beatles musicality can be directly attributed to their producer George Martin. He virtually created huge sections of their most ground breaking albums. Not so with Radiohead, they're truly extraordinary in the range of their music and their time together, and not just playing the same covers like the Stones or other old bands.
At this point they may have passed everyone.

not true. beatles went from playing a few chorded poppy crap songs to starting the psychedelic revolution in the 60's within a couple of years. thats progression. radiohead has been on the scene for more than 15 years. beatles had about 6 or 7 years only and they accomplished a countless number of things. I wouldn't put radiohead above beatles as a band. They were better instrumentally I agree, but the beatles were more experimental for their time. listen to tomorrow never knows made in 66'

yeah, and rock was a young baby that was developing fast... now, rock is a mature woman with lots of kids with almost perfect self esteem and looks, so it's hard to progress something that is almost fully developed. Off course there will be more progression but not so fast as they were back in 60's.

Hard to believe that they were influenced by REM who are a very average, middle of the road, formulaic band. Radiohead's compositions are brilliant, edgy and original. REM is verse, chorus, verse, chorus yada yada

I can see how thats possible, and you underestimate REM
