I couldn't get on with the later version of the film even if the script was much closer to the actual book than the 1956 film. Once you see Orson Wells, nothing comes closer to it and with regards to Gregory Peck playing Mapple in the later version - well, forget it.
Peck was a completely lost cause in both - even by his own admittance.
I had the chance to meet a guy who was a young lad who lived in the Irish village they filmed the Pub and harbour scenes.

I agree, Welles was one of the most gifted artists in the whole history of cinema.
However, I appreciate Peck too.
