The question was about AMERICANS, Now my answer would be that an "american" doesn't have to be someone from the US, it could be someone from North or South America. Now still, you would have to be stupid to not know where USA is, living in brazil but there are uneducated people. The literacy rate in brazil (2006) is 88.6%,so if 11% of people are illiterate i doubt they would be able to point a different country on a map.

Or maybe SOME people from US are idiots :P

I personally believe us americans are rich and advanced and we? can use GPS and Google Earth instead of old fashioned maps which are for poor trash countries such as Mexico, canada and other poor countries from Europe, Asia and Africa who cannot afford advance technology such as GPS device and Google Earth Software and too backward to use it.
