I just came from a funeral today. My BFF's daughter was stillborn on Sept. 15 2009. She was just about to start her 6th month when the Dr. couldn't find a heartbeat and after 1 week, she was induced and gave birth Grace Marie. A poem read at the funeral mass, called "The Cord" is so beautiful and perfect for parents who are going through this.

my baby was 10 lb 11 and 63.5 cm long.

An angel wrote in the Book of Life
My baby's date of birth
Then whispered as she closed the book
"Too beautiful for Earth"

I would need to know more about the history of stillbirth before commenting on whether or not it is a tragedy on a national level. It certainly is for the parents of stillborn children, and I am truly sorry for their loss. I also know that compared to the number of healthy births in the U.S., 30,000 is still quite small. It would be great to reduce that number even more...but if that is not possible, maybe the only explanation for some tragedies is that they simply happen.

I don't think there are any more stillbirths now than in the past, in fact the number was probably much higher before prenatal care became standard practice, but the numbers are still fairly high - 1 in every 100 pregnancies will be lost after the 20th week. That's over 40,00 per year - way too many, by any standard. Cancer used to be a tragedy that "just happened" to people, until people started doing research and came up with treatments.
