Compost produced at the Edmonton Composting facility is processed under controlled conditions that result in high temperatures that kill pathogens. It is further processed by 'curing' to achieve a mature compost that is not only safe to apply to land but improves soil quality.
It is continually sampled and extensively tested for pathogens, agronomic nutrient value, metals, and maturity to ensure that it is safe. It meets guidelines set by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment.
