I'm sorry, but kids are not "researching", "collecting data", and providing "rich content" outside the class room via Twitter, IM, SMS, etc. I agree that the classroom needs to change and adapt to the changes in our culture and technological advances; but kids are fooling around on such mediums... not "collecting data."
Yes, get technology in the hands of our teachers. Yes, reform and adapt teaching to today. But don't deliver a load of B.S. about what students are doing outside the class.
Its an exciting way of learning established today. And school isnt just going to be able to provide to all the skills students need to survive the years to come -- teamwork, creativity, multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural, information literacy, communication, problem solving.
Maybe students are not really terrible in school if their exams were to based on performance on these NEW skills rather than single answer exams.
IT IS THE DEATH OF EDUCATION, BUT THE DAWN OF LEARNING. Wow controversial.
I definitely that technology is a necessity for the future of education. The current generation, and certainly future generation, of students are digital natives. They are used to functioning on a daily basis with the use of technology. Not including this technology in the classroom is negligent especially because technology is beneficial for both the teacher and student. The student is used to being around technology constantly (Cont...)
outside of school, so bringing the technology into the classroom makes the students feel comfortable and provides and effective way to learn. For the teacher, technology provides a different way to teach a particular concept; usually more efficient, enhancing or effective than when taught without the use of technology. It might take time for the teacher to catch up with the shifts in technology, but the benefits are endless.
I couldn't have put it better -" The death of education, the beginning of learning." I'm seriously thinking of taking my 8yo son out of school. He learns more with me in a day with electronic connectivity and communication than he learns in a week at his school.
