of course it speeds it up, but what is happening is it is actually synchronizes with frequency. the thing is acting like a synchronized motor. if you take to induction motors and join them at the shafts with a steel couplng, the drive motor pushing the induction generator will appear to speed up, but it is the back emf of the generator flowing in the single conductive shaft that causes the prime mover to synchro itself to the applied frequency.

wouldn't it be just like the gears on my bike??.. i could apply the same pressure on the pedals . . . but depending on the gear i could speed up. . or slow down . . isn't that what he's doing with the bar?? like changing gears

Just realise that relative mu is much higher in ferromagnetic materials, leading to a stronger flux linkage. This is why air-core inductors need ridiculous number of turns.

Using the rod lowers the reluctance (wiki this buzzword if you want) of the link between the magnets and the induction motor enough to apparently cause some kind of effect.....
