At the young age of 12 Einstein had already learned geometry & by the age of 16 had learned calculus. depictions of him as not having mathematical ability are greatly exaggerated. Portrayals of him as being somewhat absent-minded however,... may not be misplaced.
As for stories of his poor grades in elementary school math... I personally believe those scores due to his tendency to conduct "thought experiments" and lack focus on the "here & now"... (unappreciated activities by his then teachers
