I saw Kogan play in of all places the Canberra Theatre back in the 70s. There has never been a better player, his Paganini recordings are certainly the most flawless that I've heard. I think his loyalty to the Soviets really hurt his career.

Funny and surprising to hear Milstein and Szeryng speaking french!
And Kogan seems so shy!

To a point, the instrument doesn't matter. A great player can make a Roth violin sound marvelous. (And this I've heard first hand)
But a great violin allows you to "ask" certain things of it and it replies-- YES!

It is mostly the player. The instrument is owner of the great deal of elements you can use as a player, therefore it has to match with you.

But what itzhak said is true, the player is more important.
