look, there is no discussion, marian is basicly know for two things.. One: he has an amazing technique. Two: he swings like there is no twomorrow... I am a big oscar peterson fan, and there is no denying marians playing is similar. Oscar was called the swinging techniquan and I think marian falls under the same category...
Uh...no...terms like "swing" are subjective. Anything that involves "feel" is highly subjective. Different musicians play w/ different rhythmic emphasis, place beats in slightly different places, and so on. Likewise, different listeners (or different players) react to these individual variations in feel in different ways. So, do you think this group swings?
I haven't read any nit-picking--just pretty thoughtful opinions. I agree that while he has chops up the wazoo, he doesn't swing (the whole group doesn't) and he's pretty unmusical, IMO. Virtuosity doesn't equal taste (or feel). In fact, sometimes it's a substitute for taste. When you have chops like this, it's easy to dazzle. That doesn't mean the player is doing anything especially interesting. I watched a few other clips of his, he seems to play this way all the time. Flash gets old quickly.
Just for the record, "On The Trial" was written by Ferde Grofe, not Oscar Peterson.
brother patrescu is a good bassist but maybenot so dynamic as RAY AND nielshenning .
I love it From 7:57... This man is a genius
Alrighty...if there's no discussion...

It is very clear from you comment that you have no idea what swing is. Things either swing or they dont, it not a matter of oppinion...

Fantastic playing - and I totally agree that anybody who insists on nit-picking a player of this ability, is just an idiot in my book!
