Yes, I think that is right re the receiver and the piston. The main weakness is where the stock joins the metalwork. You wouldn't want to go bashing down too many doors with it.

The rifle itself wasen't a rip off. Internally, the STG44 and AK-47 share little in common. More or less, the Russians ripped off the idea of an assault rifle from the Germans. There's nothing wrong with pressed metal. Machined recievers are expensive and don't really provide any sort of extra durability over a pressed metal.
