Throughout Guatemala and the developing world, laundry is still largely done by hand. This is a very time consuming process. The pedal washing machine provides an alternative to hand washing or expensive and inefficient electric machines.

Great to see this video and nice low tech design. Shame the audio is so poor on the video as I have trouble understanding what she is saying. I've posted a video response showing another design for a pedal power washing machine but probably less useful to third world use.
There is a better alternative to this, it's called a WonderWash. You fill it with hot water, some soap and you crank it. It is airtight so the hot water and hot air create a lot of pressure and force the detergent into the clothes.
I wish they said how affective this method was? How clean clothes get and how long it takes to do a wash cycle etc....?
I am thinking on building a cabin in woods. Something like this I could build for long stays in woods. Looks like it is made from scraps of parts, a little welding and viola a cheap machine
From my experience, half and hour of bicycling is enough to run a wash, rinse and spin cycle. The clothes come out very clean, and so dry you can't wring anything out of them! It's not an easy project per se, but it's doable, effective and fun!

Looks like a good idea.
