seth fart, before bladerunner, sci fi films had a utopia vision of the future, like logans run, time machine etc... thanks to blade runner, sci fi films have used the dark atmosphere consist of rain, pollution, over population, artificial memorys, can you name a couple films of the top of head? i'll give you matrix, total recall, minority report, crow, dark city just to name a few.

I think you should watch Logan's Run again. THX 1138, The Omega Man, Soylent Green etc etc all dystopian sci-fi films.

logans run had cheezy special effects. the whole point was to answer your question what did bladerunner start, and the answer is style. i wasn't talkin about story.

the time machine didnt have a utopian future. I don't know about the film, but the eloi and morlock thing in the book wasn't exactly utopian.

the "look" of it did. i guess you didn't see the movie but the world above looked like paradise.  I'm not talking about story, for the third time, i'm talking about set design on film.

Star Wars (ie the two that came before Bladerunner) wasn't utopian. But then I suppose that's neither earth nor the future. No rain either, and no night time scenes. Is there absolutely nothing before Blade runner?

The SETS were! the look and feel had the PG charm to them despite the peril. overall feeling of all pre bladerunner films wernt all that dark( and im talking about design of the future cities and worlds)

except Blade Runner, because the guy who wrote the original screen play didn't really like the book but thought it would make a sweet movie. ridley scott never read the book.
that said, it's still a brilliant interpretation of the book.
