Just listen to Nick's mum's poem. I think it hints at the sombre state of mind she tended to carry around with her. Nick's sister said that their mother would have found life hard if she hadn't met and married their father. Maybe Nick could have been saved by meeting the right woman. Unfortunately, Molly might have been sombre, but Nick had it a lot worse than that. Poor sod. R.I.P. Nick, we love you now.
