I think it is entertaining, if not hilarious to listen to Perlman & Gitlis talk about Milstein's unusual practice habits. Milstein had a real enjoyable attitude that we all can learn from.
I think Milstein said what he said because of one of the many images that can come into one's mind when indulging in a particular field such as music. In this particular case: He probably pictured the thought of a violinist performing on stage for many concerts alternately as coming on the stage many times "scratching" the violin. If he truly though it was silly or repulsive, I believe he wouldnt bother studying violin at all. It's pretty hilarious when he describes it as you can see haha.
