Simon Phillips plays two bass drums and sets them both up on a recording gig even if the drum part doesn't require a double bass beat, because the resonance of the second drum is what (he feels) gives him his "sound". That being said, Mason does use the double bass sometimes in the spacey stuff much as Moon used double bass for fills, not beats (I know Moon used them a lot more, don't blast me on this). I also think Mason liked the idea of having 2 bass drum heads to advertise artwork on...
