In the 1980 Playboy interview (shortly before he turned 40 and less than 2 mos before his death) he said that he was looking forward to being 40 because "they say thats when life begins".

Another quote (from imdb): "I'm not going to waste my life as I have been, which was running at 20,000 miles an hour. I have to learn not to do that, because I don't want to die at 40." Quite ironic if you ask me.

Poor old John. What a nice man. When he talked about EGSTHEMAMM that day, he never knew that a cruel deranged criminal would destroy him. So sad, what a waste of a legend.
