ddviolinist--I'm not sure you really read what I said. I said that for some, Szeryng's sound was not immediately recognizable--and, I go on to say the same about Perlman's sound, the one who "criticized" Szeryng. This I find to be rather ironic, no? I am glad that you personally identify with Szeryng's sound and its qualities. For me, however, I find the sound of Kreisler, Heifetz, Elman, even Mütter to be even more unmistakable. Maybe my ear is less discerning than yours.
I have watched this many times, and have always been very disappointed in Perlman during this part of the interview. He seems very competitive to go on in such a manner, including his story about asking his wife who is playing, "oh it must be Szeryng." Very immature and competitive. Must have had a beef with him. Not the best side of Perlman.
ipmoic, I don't understand this comment of yours, personally. I can always pick out Szeryng. His sound to me is very distinctive. Amazing clarity, a very specific timing of his own musically (as many of them had, especially Kreisler). For me, Szeryng's sound was remarkable. One of my favorites, as well as D.O. and Shumsky. These three had amazing sounds, timing, and musical taste.
Well, Szeryng was known for his sometimes arrogant behavior. I think that Perlman's negative opinion about Szeryng maybe is caused because of some personal problem between them, or maybe because of some negative statement or comment Szeryng may had done about Perlman's playing.
I completely disagree with perlman's opinion. He didn't listen to szeryng's bach and his beethoven violin concierto if he did he wouldn't say that. .He was a violinist with great musicality and soul, one of the best ever and my personaly favourite with milstein.
mikey31378: To say that Perlman always sounds the same is also dissappointing and belittles you - falling into your own trap. Perlman clearly is no great fan of Szerying, but that's his right. Yes it is all a matter of taste as all these violinists are great in their individual way, and all contributed something to the golden age of the violin.
Perlman's opinion is disappointing and he just belittles himself. Szeryng was a highly intelligent, respected and sensitive person and violinist, rather than just obviously emotional. Perlman has a different approach to music, less reflective, a mostly emotional one and that is why all of his music sounds the same. Matter of taste...

That makes him different from many others who try to promote themselves.
