Clips focusing on Thomas Seymour, 1st Baron Sudeley and Lord High Admiral (c.1508 - 1549) and his relationship with Elizabeth.
Thomas Seymour was the second son of John Seymour and therefore brother to Edward Seymour, Lord Protector of England and Jane Seymour, Henry VIII's third wife. As such he was also uncle to Edward VI, Jane Seymour's son by Henry. Thomas Seymour was noted for his ambition and his attempts to gain more power for himself during the reign of his nephew. An example of his ambition was his treatment of Elizabeth Tudor, Henry VIII's younger daughter. Henry had ensured that his daughter Elizabeth was include in the English succession and provided her with land and wealth. Seymour had made attempts to marry one of Henry's daughters but his advances had been rejected by Edward's council who had to grant permission for Mary and Elizabeth to marry. Instead he married Henry VIII's widow, Katherine Parr who was Elizabeth's guardian. His conduct with Elizabeth was indecent and eventually Katherine sent Elizabeth away. Seymour's ambition continued after his wife's death; he went on to bribe Sir William Sharington, Master of the Mint in order to collect capital for his other plans. When he was questioned about his conduct and granted an opportunity to explain himself in front of the council he decided instead to embark on another risky plan -- to kidnap the boy king. He was caught in the act, arrested and found guilty of treason by his attempts to usurp powers from his brother, the Lord Protector of the realm. He was beheaded in March 1549.
A popular myth is that upon hearing his death Elizabeth is said to have remarked:
'Today died a man with much wit and not much judgment'

I believe that Dudley was weak and stupid in his ambitions because he did not have enough sense to get out of his own way and often times caused Elizabeth a great deal of personal and professional pain with his actions. As for loving her, I'm sure he did and she loved him as well, but he lacked discipline and common sense, in my opinion and Elizabeth was wise not to make him (or any man) her consort...
Let me add in my comment to Gwyn142 that I do not appreciate my opinions being referred to as stupid. Can people not disagree without throwing around school yard insults like five year olds these days? I have a right to say what I please, within reason, as do you and anyone else. I try to make discussions pleasant, even engaging, so please show me some respect and I will show the same...
if i was Elizabeth I sister i would have done everything to protect her and keep her safe in my arms from everyone who tried to do harm to her..then i would have those hanged, drawn, and quartered..and have them remember their alliegiance to Elizabeth I.
Mary should have taken her head off. Elizabeth isn't admirable at all. She went to mass all during Mary's reign just to save her own neck. She was not willing to die for her religion, that's for damn sure. Constantly throwing herself at Mary's feet, sobbing big dramatic tears....give me a break.
haroof No. She was shrewd, tactical and clever. She knew what she was doing and she also knew what she needed to do to survive. Her ambition was to become Queen. Dying for her religion isn't gonna help is it. To do so seems rather stupid really. Elizabeth was thinking and planning the future. Furthermost she ruled with her head and not with her heart.

Starkey is a complete bore.
