READ THIS In this video I deconstruct the broken watch straw man argument used by creationist / ID supporters to attack evolution. I had to pack a ton of information into this video so you WILL need to pause it periodically.
The basic premise of the argument is that a bunch of parts will never randomly assemble into the correct arrangement to form a properly functioning complex. Once again, creationists / ID supporters miss the basic concept of evolution entirely. No biologists believes, nor is there any evidence that complex systems form spontaneously in one fell swoop. That would be creation. Systems evolve through many intermediates, one step at a time, slowly building up the complexity.
Here I deconstruct their straw man argument. Basically, I simulate clocks as living organisms. Selective pressure is focused on their ability to accurately tell time. NO goal is imposed on the design (you can tell this because every simulation ends with a differently constructed clock). And it works. Clocks evolve through a series of transitional forms: Pendulum, Proto-clock, 1-handed Clock, 2-handed Clock, 3-handed Clock, and 4-handed Clock. Gradually the complexity is built up.
These labels I have assigned to the transitional forms have nothing to do with the simulation itself. They are names I assigned so that we could analyze what the population was doing. The clocks are just clocks, living in their world, trying to tell time as accurately as possible.
One thing I wanted to address but didn't have time in the video is how rapid the transitional period can be. In some simulations the population goes from pendulums to 3-handed Clocks in a hundred or so generations. And the transitions between the transitional forms are even more rapid, happening in about ten generations. Chances are none or a very limited representation of that transition will be preserved in the fossil record.
One thing I should add. The program does not draw the clocks. It maintains, mates, and simulates them, but the drawing must be done manually from the genome matrix.
The program is written in MatLab.
The hand rotations that begin with 86 are 86,000 not 86.000. When YouTube compressed the video it becam hard to tell a comma from a period.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you seem to be under the mistaken impression that proof of evolution would somehow disprove the existence of a god. Personally I'm an agnostic, but if I was a beleiver then I'd see evolution as the most ingenious, elegant and subtle processes - truly worthy of the hand of a divine being - far greater, more impressive, and, dare I say it GODLIKE, than a showy magic trick of a 6 day creation.
Youtube comments have this awesome feature, if you read the comment above the one your trying to reply to, you can sometimes see what they were replying to. If you would have taken advantage of this great feature you would have realized I never said it could be proven, and was infact explaining the very same thing you were trying to explain to me. I have never had a issue with this as I naturally was able to follow internet dialect, but it can be tricky for some. Youll get it just keep it up.
Not sure how many more times we can explain this but...
A theory is NEVER proven and can only be disproven. The theory of gravity tries to explain why objects with mass tend to move towards one another based upon their masses. There can be a millions different tests to confirm the current theory is correct but it can never become a fact. Theories are never facts. They explain a set of facts and observations with the most likely explanation or mechanism.
The almost incredible fact that a caterpillar changes into butterfly a completely different creature able to fly ..why does it do this and how?..by what evolutionary process did this come about..and why ?what is the purpose? How could evolution possibly account for this amazing metamorphosis?
Part of the reasoning in this video does prove theories about evolution. Basic components gradulally built into different types of clocks, from pendulum to four handed clocks, All out of random trial and error, just like evoulution tells us living organisms would.
You're right, it's already a given (among rational people at least) that there is no proof for God. It is not difficult to disprove nearly ANY argument that pretends to provide proof for the existence of a supernatural being that is omniscient and omnipotent. If there WAS such proof, there wouldn't be a question.
Dont get me wrong I like your version just as good as mine, I just wasnt sure what it was meant for. Artistic expression of some kind maybe? I wouldnt know I have never taken art classes and honestly besides doodles I cant really produce anything. I used to trace things when I was younger to compensate but I feel silly doing that now so I have tried to get better.
Maybe you replied to the wrong person and this was all a misunderstanding?
The entire point of the video is as a counter argument to the 'Smashed Watch' argument for Intelligent Design. If you don't buy into that argument -good for you!
It doesn't need to 'prove evolution', or 'disprove god'. That's not the point.
There is no point in trying to prove or disprove god, just as there's also no point to arguing on the internet...
