Exactly what is Bruce Gilden trying to "capture"?
If he's trying to capture the body language of people reacting to an inconsiderate arse hole that jumps in front of their face and takes a picture without their permission, then he is a genius. And hats off to him to having "no ethics", as it's essential for the type of work he does.
But in my opinion his approach is not one that should be celebrated, and neither are his pictures. They're just not that good.
wish i had a tenth of the balls he's got! i'm too chicken to get close like that and take photos of people. although i'm not a fan of his technique, it's his way, then so be it.
i just wish i was able to get so close and be confident to take photos of people like that.
lol @ the hat and vest lol @ flash lol @ his technique lol @ the part where he told the men to stop smiling but then still took the shot. All he captures are people's reactions to his weird behaviour. Street photography should be about extracting unique candid moments of daily life. It's about being invisible. This guy pollutes every situation by his utter presence. Can't believe he works for Magnum. Maybe being an arrogant elitist snob counts more than being a good photographer these days.
Nice Billingham bag, great Domke jacket, but I would rather not use flash. His modus operandi is too in-your-face for my liking, and even though I am a street photographer myself, I'd probably thump him on the nose if he jumped in on me like that because I would think he was attacking me.
I'm not a fan, either of his methods or his pictures(I just don't like them, it's not how they were taken that puts me off), however I'll admit that I wish i had half the nerve he has
yeah he's such a bad photographer that he's signed to MAGNUM !!
jesus the picture takes roughly 1/125 of a second to take, how long do you think it takes for them to forget about it ?
If your into photography then i'll bet you wish you had the balls to do what he does, damn i do !
fair play to him
p.s if street photography offends you dont click on the link, what do all you haters expect street photography to consist of ? juggling acts or some other cool but bullshit subject !
@ichirootaniguchi I went to your flickr site AND your website.
I see zero street photography shots. All I see are controlled model shots. Do you even shoot street?
Obviously you haven't shot like Bruce does, so you don't even know how much of a negative response you'll get when you try to pass off the public as cheap (ie. FREE) models.
Oh, wait. I see one street shot on your flickr with a person it it (called Watching, Waiting) but the person is 100 meters away.

*snickers*
This is paparazzi-style photography, not street.
