that's because Gustavo Santaolalla is the producer of many songs of the BABEL soundtrack...he's awesome...there are some songs on the Brokeback Mountain, too...

what kind of instrument is this? is it a mandoline or a guitar! this is one of my favourite songs of gustavo....i like the melodie!

the instrument is called "charango" a peruvian instrument, similar like a small guitar, with 12 cords instead of the normal 6, thats why it have a very particular and high rate of notes.
