FOOTNOTE: LINES 16 and 59: The "vat of slime" here alludes to the birth of Kvasir, the Norse personification of shamanism and poetry. Once long ago there had been a war between the two races of gods. In settling the dispute, all members of both tribes spat into a vat. From the spittle they formed Kvasir who was both good and good fer ya. He was entertaining and uplifting. Of course, right-wingers assassinated him. His blood was brewed into the mead of poetry, which the gods dole out to virtuous and deserving poets, but a bunch of it spilled, so non-virtuous, undeserving poets are out there, too.
