Didn't the review of the Stooges first album include a line about 'the band are punks cruisng for burgers"? I suppose I would date that particular use of the term at 1969. Get a copy of Legs McNeil's "Please Klll Me" to fill the gaps regarding the New York punk. It's a cracking read.

I personally think punk came from 60s garage bands, both American and English. The term punk (meaning type of music) I think started in England though. I think the sex pistols are seen as the first punk band because they were called it first, however, the music itself was alive for longer then them.

Actually the first were the Electric Eels from Cleveland, Ohio. Their singles came out in 1978, but have been recorded in 1975 and the band came out in 1972. They were snotty, shambollic, noisy, and not as bluesy as MC5 or The Stooges.

Punk came from Brisbane ( The Saints I'm Stranded came out before Anarchy),
For a start listen to The Boys Next Door!
"I've Been contemplating suicide, but that really does'nt suity my style"
Then try and imagine being stuck in Brisbane Australia in 76. Fuck! A Fascist peanut farmer as the leader of a large part of the east coast. God help us all !

@gorditcho100 been trying to decide who to reply to,and as an aus gal i know about pumpkin scones and the lethal dose........I don't know who is the start, consider Jonny thunders,New York Dolls Iggy Pop,basically punks been a protest song all along, which is prob why the 60's commenter said so,the only dif is no-one listened when it was loving,no-one listened when it was humourous[ie ramones]no-one listened when confronted[holiday in cambodia],and now we hear Clash songs in commercials.JellosHAA
