this song is not about that choice, lots of Australians and Americans were conscripted, let me repeat that : they were forced, they often did not want to go.
Wholly shit I just read some more comments. 1stly RED GUM loves this cover so much he appears on the recoeded version for a record and to014649 REDGUN never wanted a fucking cent he wrote this for his brother (albiet through marrage) he has no interest in money dickhead otherwise he write something that would sell alot since he has the talen, not something that would take 10 years to become recognised
It's your parogative not to serve in the armed forces, Bu tthose stupid people who have from the bore war till now have given you that choice. But you have no right to call them/ME stupid. I can only hope that if we ever come under attack (UNLIKLEY) that you take up arms in defence of our nation, HATE THE WAR NOT THE TROOPS.
This song serves as a telling reminder to every bogan with a Southern Cross tattoo what real patriotism cost young men in the past.
If you think it is offensive to the Vets, take a copy down your local RSL with a listing of the lyrics. See what they think about it. This cover serves to bring to a new generation an idea of what is the real price paid by our men in uniform.
They don't defile anything. I was only 19 dealt with the fact that the soldiers sent to Vietnam were just kids haunted by horrific memories upon their return.
It in no way devaules their efforts and sacrifices and doesn't seek to politicise the issue either. If you feel that this song is an argument against war, perhaps you have a guilty conscience and would prefer the television images of jets blowing things up rather than being confronted with the human cost paid by your own countrymen!
I am a teenager. I care greatly about history. Especially Australian History. I see where your coming from about lots of teenagers not knowing or caring about Australian History and war vets. I also care a lot about Australian War vets. I am joining the army when I am old enough. I know exactly what you mean.
