Vietnam War 1962-73.
From 1962 approximately 50,000 Australians, including ground troops, air force and navy personnel served in Vietnam. 520 died and close to 2,400 were wounded. The war caused great social and political dissent in Australia. Conscripts were sent to Vietnam. Many draft resisters, conscientious objectors, and protesters were fined or gaoled, while soldiers met a hostile reception on their return home.
The Battle of Long Tan is arguably the most famous battle fought by the Australian Army during the Vietnam War. It was fought in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan, about 4 km north-east of Vung Tau, South Vietnam on August 18-19, 1966.
The action occurred when D Company of the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), part of the 1st Australian Task Force (1 ATF), encountered the Viet Cong (VC) 275 Regiment and elements of the D445 Local Forces Battalion. D Company was supported by other Australian units, as well as New Zealand and United States personnel.
Just over 100 diggers withstood the best efforts of over 1500 Viet Cong soldiers to kill them. Australian losses were 18 killed and 21 wounded.
The battle is often used in Australian officer training as an example of the importance of combining and coordinating infantry, artillery, armour and military aviation.

By late 1970, Australia had begun winding down its military effort in Vietnam. The withdrawal of troops continued throughout 1971. The last battalion left Nui Dat on 7 November, while a handful of advisers remained in Vietnam for the following year. In December 1972 they became the last Australian troops to come home: their unit had seen continuous service in South Vietnam for ten and a half years.
The song on this video is timeless and honours the memory of those who have died in the service and defence of Australia in war.

when I was young I was a loser.on the piss,in fights, knocking off cars(never got caught)screwing everything in sight. Then in 1968 my marble came out ,they taught me how to be a soldier and off to war I went .I killed people before they killed me.I came home, married an angle, had 4 great kids. But every night before I go to sleep I ask god to look after those soldiers that gave their life to me so I could live mine. please dont fight, help each other before it,s to late
