The word Baraka means "blessing" in several languages; watching this film, the viewer is blessed with a dazzling barrage of images that transcend language. Filmed in 24 countries and set to an ever-changing global soundtrack, the movie draws some surprising connections between various peoples and the spaces they inhabit, whether that space is a lonely mountaintop or a crowded cigarette factory. Some of these attempts at connection are more successful than others: for instance, an early sequence segues between the daily devotions of Tibetan monks, Orthodox Jews, and whirling dervishes, finding more similarity among these rituals than one might expect. And there are other amazing moments, as when sped-up footage of a busy Hong Kong intersection reveals a beautiful symmetry to urban life that could only be appreciated from the perspective of film. The lack of context is occasionally frustrating--not knowing where a section was filmed, or the meaning of the ritual taking place--and some of the transitions are puzzling. However, the DVD includes a short behind-the-scenes featurette in which cinematographer Ron Fricke (Koyaanisqatsi) explains that the effect was intentional: "It's not where you are that's important, it's what's there." And what's here, in Baraka, is a whole world summed up in 104 minutes. --Larisa Lomacky Moore

Half the world's population live in poverty & hunger, the other half are nations whose govts live in paranoia & invest trillions in arms, with intentions of killing & destroying lives rather than saving them through spending on food programs. The arms trade is the third biggest generator of industry on the planet, so what's the harm in expending lives in order to ensure it's kept going & life is kept sweet for those involved! It's twisted & sickening, but the almighty dollar is more important.
There's definately a problem with unregulated pure capitalism. This era is also one of the first to witness massive, organized genocides (not the only era though...)
However, on the whole, the living standards of the average human being has improved massively. Health, sanitation, food, water, housing is much better even in developing countries than a century or more ago. Even Africa is slowly but surely moving towards a more prosperous future
You gotta watch this thing in hi-def. I got the blu-ray recently. Jeez, this is NOT entertainment (as one of the writers commented in the extra features); it's a meditation--you know, where you short-circuit your "normal" thougth processes and instead sit and wait for your mind to accept reality as it is, rather than constantly strive to pursue positve thoughts and suppress negative thoughts. This film is therapy. It might be strong medicine at times but well worth repeat viewings.
Thank you for posting these sometimes eye-opening videos for us all. Earth is a beautiful and wonderful place, but sometimes people have made a hell of what could have been a heaven.
Regardless of whether these are pretentious filmmakers or not, the beauty and/or provocative nature of art comes not only from the subject matter but from the way it is composed and arranged for viewing. This movie could have been done poorly. It wasn't. The way that the filmmakers organized and presented their views of the earth and humanity is what makes this powerful and "daring."
By no means am I saying you have to like it or even agree with it. Just understand, that's the nature of art.
