The song is played in standard tuning, as is every other song off of Death Magnetic, with the exception of All Nightmare Long, which is played in drop d. It's just a different distortion used on this album as they do every new album. Get your facts straight before you criticize, idiot. James was sick for this performance.

James cant pull off the vocals that he has in the studio live. The studio took several takes to get the perfect sound whereas live his voice is getting old and cracking and popping quite alot at standard e tuning,so to get close to the grit of the origincal recording they downtune a step or haf step or whatever. It would be a worse performance if it was in standard. This isnt a diss on the band, they'r the best metal band around imo but its the reason that they downtune. Class tune, class album.

Idiot the studio recordings arent his actual voice. THey master it up so it can sound presentable.

Mastering doesnt affect the pitch or the tone of his voice, it's merely for adjusting with the final stereo master mix. what you hear on the album is 20 or 30 takes all cut together but they'r not pitch shifted from a step down or anything. He sings in the key of of the song you hear recorded.
