That's also true, but as people moved to and from trading cities they took rats with them (by mistake!) as they travelled by boat along rivers and the sea and fleas on their clothes, so the fleas travelled on rats and humans by many different ways infecting people and animals on the way!

All that is true. However, a flea doesn't travel that far on its own. The ideal method of transportation is one rat traveling, dying of the plague, and transferring its load onto another rat. There is evidence there was not nearly enough rats present across Europe for this to take place, so an infected rat could cause a localized outbreak but the disease wouldn't move beyond that point.

But fleas also live on other animals (including people) and clothes, and trade also brought rats with it from Asia, where the plague originated
