Here, second mover advantage is key…until Clint demonstrates one of Nash’s initial realizations in game theory: the greatest reward goes to those who set up a game, get others to comply, then cheat. The loser is said to be at the “sucker point”, which is dead in the dirt in Van Cleef’s case.
