http://www.tedxmanhattan.org/2012talks Artist Stefani Bardin, TEDxManhattan 2011 Fellow, shows us her latest project -- using a "smartpill" to reveal how we digest differently processed foods.
Stefani produces videos and immersive, interactive installations that explores the influences of corporate culture and industrial food production. Her current project works with gastroenterologist Dr. Braden Kuo at Harvard University where they just completed the first ever clinical study to use the M2A™ and SmartPill devices that look at how the human body responds to processed versus whole foods. She is an Honorary Resident at Eyebeam Art +Technology Center in New York and teaches in the School of Art, Media and Technology at Parsons The New School for Design and in the Food Studies Program at The New School for Public Engagement.

I am not a shill for the big Food industry, however this being a TED talk, I came here expecting scientific findings. Instead, the only "evidence" of a problem with processed food was that it digested more slowly. Then I was given mounds of unsupported assumptions such as slow digestion equals bad, and oil derived food substances are bad, and artificial colors are bad. These may or may not be true but real scientists don't make assumptions without evidence. Please act like REAL scientists.

Why can't people promoting healthy eating also be promoting good chemical literacy? Saying TBHQ is related to butane is quite a stretch considering it's a derivative of hydroquinone and by calling these molecules out as petroleum products, while true, paints a negative picture. Just because something is derived from petroleum doesn't make it bad, just as molecules derived from nature aren't always good (looking at you, venoms).

Am I a shill or retarded to use critical thinking and desire an artist to not make unfounded scientific claims? I prefer to not be misled, which means I try to maintain an open mind and will change my opinion when shown evidence. I do not think it is in the public interest to make scientific claims, no matter the source, without evidence.
