Just to throw this out there... regardless of your sexuality the both of you should have had wills. He should have declared you the executor of his estate. AND he should have given you power of attorney, which in most states you can do regardless of the person's relationship to you. Had you done all of these things you probably wouldn't be having this kind of issue and your sexuality really plays no role in the events that were played except for his family's reaction to you.
