Two words: Research and development. We can get off oil someday, or at least depend on it much less as long as enough money is being spent on RnD. Investors aren't going to want to fund that RnD if oil remains at the low (that's right I said low) price it is now. So either oil has to be made more expensive, or governments need to spend money on RnD... but where to get that money? Tax oil, or tax greenhouse emissions.

It can be, it would just be rather unpleasant. Although I disagree with bladder1010, s/he made one point I think I'll borrow: The Amish are living proof of the discardability (I couldn't care less about the fact that this isn't a word) of petroleum, although it would be a lot harder for us than it is for them, and replacing oil would be problematic as well. And in any case, "hard" does not mean "silly to even suggest".
