---------------
There's a collider under Geneva
Reaching new energies that we've never achieved before
Finally we can see with this machine
A brand new data peak at 125 GeV
See how gluons and vector bosons fuse
Muons and gamma rays emerge from something new
There's a collider under Geneva
Making one particle that we've never seen before

The complex scalar
Elusive boson
Escaped detection by the LEP and Tevatron
The complex scalar
What is its purpose?
It's got me thinking

Chorus:
We could have had a model (Particle breakthrough, at the LHC)
Without a scalar field (5-sigma result, could it be the Higgs)
But symmetry requires no mass (Particle breakthrough, at the LHC)
So we break it, with the Higgs (5-sigma result, could it be the Higgs)

Baby I have a theory to be told
The standard model used to discover our quantum world
SU(3), U(1), SU(2)'s our gauge
Make a transform and the equations shouldn't change

The particles then must all be massless
Cause mass terms vary under gauge transformation
The one solution is spontaneous
Symmetry breaking

Roll your vacuum to minimum potential
Break your SU(2) down to massless modes
Into mass terms of gauge bosons they go
Fermions sink in like skiers into snow

Lyrics and arrangement by Tim Blais and A Capella Science
Original music by Adele

How long did it take you to make this video? How many tracks are there? what type of a recorder did you use to create this? can you do a video showing people how to do this? I am a beginning songwriter and don't know how to play an instrument except my voice like you. I would like to write songs "A Capella" This would be a perfect way to get your ideas across so you can have a demo made for it. You could make a lot of money this way. my email address is rapidgeon9@bmi.net

I actually am interested in producing other people eventually, but right now I'm still experimenting with how to produce my own stuff. As for this, it took maybe 70 hours of work, and at any one time there's as many tracks as are represented in the video so.. i dunno, maybe 30? Sound-wise I'm using a pretty cheap condenser mic and running Studio One as my sound program. My suggestion if you want to try this out is get Audacity or Garage Band and just mess around with tracks. It's really easy!

Improve? Do more! And what application did you use to get all the little boxes up at the same time?

Final Cut. Not sure if there's a cheaper alternative, unfortunately. Also yeah, there's another video in the works that I was going to finish over Christmas, but various things conspired against me and now I'm deep into writing a master's thesis. Which I am procrastinating by answering YouTube comments so... maybe I'm not working the best system here? :S

I am a middle school science teacher and I LOVE your video, but my students would never understand it. This style of video would make a great educational supplement. Would you consider making video at a simpler level for budding young scientists? I would definitely show it in my classroom. Thanks for sharing your talents.

Thanks for the feedback... it's actually a real challenge to me to figure out what level I'm pushing for, because honestly I just write what first pops into my head so how complicated a song is tends to precisely mirror how well I know a subject. I suspect that your students will also not understand the next video (though I hope they'll still enjoy it) but after that I may have exhausted the subjects I'm an expert in. Maybe then things will be more at a "scientifically-minded enthusiast" level.

To be perfectly honest, I've been working on my Master's thesis all year, which is due in 5 weeks, and doesn't leave a lot of time for the countless hours it takes to make something like this. But I am working on something new, I promise. As soon as the semester is over I'll go into full swing and get it out there. Thanks for sticking around... I really appreciate it :)

My only comment is really work on your upper ranges. It's a bit heart-breaking to listen to your voice break trying to match Adele's range. Don't force yourself.

Not bad. Your top range transition could do with a little work. I love the Physics inclusion!!

Wooow :D u made my day. I am from Croatia and I like physics so i will be very happy if you could make more videos like this. My friends are fascinated and all started to research about Higgs boson. I like astrophysics so that can be your theme for next video maybe ;) Best regards from Croatia :D
