In his book "Capitalism and Freedom" (1962) Milton Friedman (1912-2006) advocated minimizing the role of government in a free market as a means of creating political and social freedom.

An excerpt from an interview with Phil Donahue in 1979.

The solution is still a system of a open society with free flow of information and system of checks and balances which restrict corporations that engage in anti-competitive actions.

That same check is needed against the government when it engages in criminal activity against the people. But the sad end is....that there is not system set up for virtue. If you can cheat, steal and game the system, it is ok as long as you don't get caught.

When I look at this, politics aside, the level of discourse is far, far more enlightening than it is today. Donahue asked challenging questions, Friedman answered, Donahue listened without yelling or interrupting, and politely followed up. This interview is the antithesis of O'Reilly or anyone on MSNBS.

actually, free market capitalism should only exist as long as there are greedy and selfish people. Otherwise the greedy and selfish end up being the ones who makes the decisions at the top when the economic power is taken from the people and placed into the hands of government,,,

You've missed the point entirely. Besides that, government should have a small a role as possible in the economy.

We had a free market up until 1933, and we had a constitutional currency until 1913.
