My Grandfather fought in the Dardanelles. I remember the wooden Turkish water bottle he brought home to Cork City. Everybody regarded it as bad luck, he should have left it behind. This is one of the great anti-war songs.

As an ex-Serviceman I can honestly say this song means a lot to us who have served, and continue to serve, our country. My family has a long history in the Australian Army, we have had people fight in every war Australia has fought in, from the Boer War to now, I have a nephew in Iraq. I had a great-Grandfather and three Great Uncles in the Dardanelles and one at the charge of Bethsheba in WW1, so when I hear this song it reminds me of the hell they went through.
