http://ArthurBrooks.AEI.org Arthur Brooks, author of the new book "The Road to Freedom," takes on the top myths about free enterprise. Part 5: "Free enterprise breeds materialism."
Free enterprise isn't about materialism. It's about earned success. Bad values make people into materialists and consumerists. The worst materialism I've ever seen happens in socialistic systems. When governments set people against each other in a race to get government resources, there's nothing more materialistic than that. The
least materialistic people I've ever met are entrepreneurs, people who are living their dreams every day. Free enterprise is generative. Free enterprise is aspirational. Free enterprise makes people into entrepreneurs so they can define their earned success the way they want. We have to work constantly to make sure that our own values are not tied down to materialism, but free enterprise sets us free.
