Kelley Williams-Bolar, a single mom from Akron, Ohio, has been convicted of a felony for claiming her daughters lived with their grandparents so they could go to a better school.
She wanted her daughters to attend school in suburban Copley Township, rather than near the projects in Akron, the location of their school district.
Sending one's kids to school in a better district is common in the US, where there's a huge difference in the quality of education between rich and poor areas.
Most of those caught get off with a slap on the wrist, but in this case the the judge said prosecutors wanted to make an example of Williams-Bolar.
The school district even hired a private detective to prove the girls lived with their Williams-Bolar in Akron and not with their grandparents in Copley Township.
Williams-Bolar has been working as a teaching assistant while studying for a teaching degree. Her felony conviction will make it hard for her to find work an educator in the future.
Prosecutors are also seeking to convict the girls' grandfather of a felony.
