British conductor Raymond Leppard produced a majestic score for this 1969 Cliver Donner directed account of the rise of the famous 9th century English King Alfred. The late David Hemmings starred in the role of Alfred, with the late Prunella Ransome playing the part of his wife Ealhswith and Michael York his viking rival Guthrum.

The movie has a strong supporting cast featuring the late Colin Blakely, a youthful Robin Askwith, Jane Asher and an early major role for Sir Ian Mckellen. Tho about a famous english King the movie was shot largely on location in Ireland.
