Like drawing back a curtain to let bright light stream in, MISS REPRESENTATION uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film explores how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in influential positions in America and challenges the media's limiting and often disparaging portrayals of women, which make it difficult for the average girl to see herself as powerful.
In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman's value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality--and not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States still ranks 90th in the world for women in national legislatures, depression rates have doubled among teenage girls, and cosmetic surgery on minors has more than tripled in the last ten years.
Stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, academics, and activists like Condoleeza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem build momentum as MISS REPRESENTATION accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leave the audience shaken and armed with a new perspective.

Women control a whopping 3% of the entire media industry, even if you think that a silly Disney show portraying a girl slapping a boy is a reason that men are more oppressed than women, men are still the ones in charge of the industry, and women are often seen victimized, inferior, and in vulnerable positions (much more often than men) on TV, in movies, music videos, etc.

Did you even watch the video? It's about the oppression of women, a serious issue, it showed objectifying images of women to make a point, and the fact that some people ignored the message and only looked to the naked women is disgusting. Objectification of men occurs too, and men also face problems, I'm not denying that, but really? Women are and historically have been oppressed, and patriarchy is a huge issue which still exists. So you can take your mens rights activism and shove up your ass

The film is true but a bit hypocritical.
Men are victims aswell. The media consitantly brainwashes us. We have to be athletic, tall, intelligent, handsome, rich, kind, confident, the protector, aka-Mr.Perfect. And the media also has little/if any problens with women cheating, where they get sympathy but men get bashed.

Thats true some women do this, but I think its more social cheer really. Frankly If a guy i'm hanging with takes his shirt off infront of me that has a 8 pack I don't cheer or get any impulses I'm just not attracted to that. I think the point of the video is to show how social media is affecting how women and men see each other. Theres no self respect or manners anymore in society and thats just two of the changes.

I kinda agree with you about men being just as affected as women. But to say "majority of people who risk their lives for others arent women." I disagree there are tons of women in military, emts, fire department, nurses, school teachers. Let me remind you that in Sandy Hook shootings teachers female teachers gave their lives to try to protect their students. I believe in equal rights but lets not bash each other with who does what the most or best. Lets just raise both genders up to equality

You are 100 % correct. But look at how the media attacked women in politics, and what shows young women are watching these days. Just turn on the radio and listen to how they describe women. Young women and girls think this is THE way we should be treated which is a result of what the media is putting out there. That is what this movie is about how the media is manipulating how women see themselves.

There is no law, rule, or natural disadvantage that prevents a woman from starting their own business, working their way up the corporate ladder, owning their own television network, or being the president of the united states. In the media they cast/ attractive men just as often as they case attractive women. Statistically, more women are accepted into colleges across the U.S. Its an even playing field, and the only thing standing in a woman's way is the belief that she is oppressed.

After seeing this, now I would truly love to see a video of the world's top sexist countries. The U.S. would probably rank as #1. Great job America! Even the poorest countries would cringe!
