Actually the disposable society only came into full force in the past 30 or so years, previously many "durable" goods were regularly repaired and continued on with extended life spans.
Our problem isn't the products so much as the cultural programming that has literally destroyed the consumer recognition of "repair". for items.

we as a society are stuck in this hamster wheel. creating more new products that eventually break down and then we have to manufacture more of them. we could use this time and resources for inventing new things and developing technologies
but now.. we're stuck making nylon stockings, and lightbulbs and other crap that's made to fail in near future
