Anyone else hear a bit of a jazz sonority in certain parts of this piece?

short and spikey to perfection--- that is the beauty of Sibelius in that most conventions are simply torn to shreds.

so much for expectations!

I just listened to this and I can barely type. A great, great performance of one of the most magnificent symphonic works ever written. I love Salonen's pacing throughout the work. Sibelius needs to be allowed to breathe and this conductor really understands that. A pleasure to hear this performance and I thank the person who posted it.

The score is online at the IMSLP site (if you accept the disclaimer.) It shows grace note-regular note both in the same pitch. Though I think here Salonen plays it like two regular notes (long loud - long loud) rather than as the more accepted interpretation of this notation as short soft - long loud.
