i agree absolutely with "eduardomaestrecuadra", karajan is one of the most important conductors ever, but kleiber too and in my opinion is even better but it's a matter of taste and i think he express the feeling over all, making the rythm faster
Kleiber was not out of control. The playing was fast but not rushed. Such was his magic. The players sustained the electricity AND virtuosity throughout. If you have listened to Kleiber's other performances, you will notice that many have this same quality. That's one reason Kleiber was so admired in spite of his meager output, and why he was so admired by other musicians. He conducted as if he was the composer himself. He was the last of an old breed of conductors.
Massacre? Kleiber is the conductor that give freedom at true music's spirit. The intra-music has been liberated for him! Really, the Karajan's version is not the only one; Karajan is very great, ok. But Kleiber let play at musiciens. Kleiber makes the freedom of the symphony.
I don't why he keeps giving the winds and percussion funny looks because they don't get the rhythm right around 2:00 onwards; it's his fault for driving this so bloody hard. Kleiber is a pale shadow of the truly 'great' maestri of the past and completely over-rated, in my view.
He's not giving them funny looks? They're perfectly on, I don't see what the problem is. What I find very strange however is how he stops conducting at 3:54
