This is from the GET TRACKSIDE series. These are the first railroad videos I shot and assembled. They used to be posted on YouTube, but later I deleted the account. I would like to re-post them here to show some of my original work. At the time I was just starting out using a standard-def JVC camera. These are a few years old.
In this clip there are several very short cuts made with the JVC camera, plus a few of the first clips I made with my Canon HV20. You can tell which parts are from the HD source by the letterbox black bars at the top and bottom of the video.
From the Reno Trench in Northern Nevada to the tunnels at Donner Pass and Highway 20 in the Sierra Nevada, there are numerous beautiful places to view, photograph and film trains. One of my favorite spots, in the first clip on this video, is called Troy Road. It's up a side road off the old Donner Pass Road between Rainbow Road and Soda Springs.

This video is shot near Highway 80 and the Gold Ranch Casino. It shows Amtrak's California Zephyr 5 pulling a private car, the Santa Fe Chico.
Yes, I should have turned the camera toward the train as it passed. I have two explanations: 1) I was new at this and 2) I was busy getting still photos. I took one of my best photos ever as the locomotive crossed the bridge.
Thanks for watching, to follow my latest videos please subscribe to this channel. I am currently working on a new Virginia and Truckee video, the Unauthorized Biography of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad. I will be updating various websites including:

While I was going through my video clips made last summer of the government-run Virginia and Truckee Railway Reconstruction project, I got a good laugh out of this one. It's a very short clip that would make an efficiency expert mad. I call it, How to Get Ready to Work for CalTrans.
After this exercise in moving a railroad tie back and forth, these guys will go practice leaning on their shovels and staring into a hole.
This is another short cut that gives an example of the source video that will make its way into my new video project, The Unauthorized Biography of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad. This is also a test of uploading HD clips. It's from a WMV file with 1920x1080 resolution, I hope you get a choice to see it in HD.

More rough cuts that will be incorporated into an upcoming video: The Unauthorized Biography of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad.
This is another set of rough shots showing the process of ballasting the tracks built on the Carson City side of Tunnel 2 in American Flat and above Silver City.
We see a loader putting ballast in the hopper cars, then the Virginia and Truckee Railroad D-1 diesel pushes the hoppers through tunnel 2, around the corner toward Donovan Siding, and drops a load of ballast.
For more information about the upcoming video, see trainarts.com after December 2009.
