Owners of perfectly good (or junky) older vehicles are given $4500 to trade it in for a government approved new vehicle as long as it has been licensed and insured for the previous 12 months. The traded in vehicle is then destroyed, even if there's nothing wrong with it and it could be used by families in places like Guatemala to dramatically improve their lives. If traded for a new Obama approved Chysler product, another rebate up to a second $4500 is matched by the Chysler Corporation. In my case, I got $4500 + $3500 as a total trade in allowance for a 1991 Ford F150 which was in fine condition but will be scraped anyway. What a shameful expensive waste.

As a result of the cash for clunkers program, this is the final ride of the 1996 Buick Roadmaster Station Wagon minutes before it got traded in on a new Pontiac, which I never would have bought without the program. The dealer was glad to get the sale. The wagon was then sold by the dealer to a salvage yard, where everything good left on the car (but the engine) will eventually be sold off as spare parts, which is what keeps junkyards in business, and makes used parts available to the public. This particular roadmaster was my work car so it had about 11 miles a day put on it at this point in its life. It had extremely high mileage. It needed a complete suspension rebuild, and all new shocks. It bounced like a ball when you hit a bump. It needed completely new brakes. It had extreme rust which can't really be seen in the video. Even the front strut towers were rusted through, and all the doorjambs. Air pump was dead, exhaust was shot, and there has been a Willy Nelson tape stuck in the tape deck since the day I bought it years (and a gazillion miles) ago. So it's radio-only for entertainment. The windshield was cracked all the way across. The rear windows were off the track, so you have to leave them up. There were a host of other problems as well, but you get the point. I was ready to get rid of it anyway, no time or desire to fix all the problems on a car that was falling apart. It can still do a mean one-tire burnout, though you can't hear how the engine was coughing and sputtering afterward. Roadmasters Rule, this was a great car. If I ever come across a rust-free example at the right price (and I need a car) I would buy another one in an instant. Great room great power, great utility (you can load 4x8 sheets of plywood or drywall in the back with all the seats folded down.) It actually gets decent mileage on the highway, when running right, though the emissions have ratcheted down considerably since 1996, which is why cars today get comparatively poor mileage for the size. They have to live in a much tighter emissions box than 13 years ago.

I bought a 2009 Toyota Corolla on July 6th from Champion Toyota (Corpus Christi, TX.). I did the Cash For Clunkers program with my 1990 Ford F150. Despite the governments warning about dealers doing these CFC deals before the July 24th revision, Champion Toyota went ahead and did the deal anyhow. They looked at my truck, I met all the requirements at the time for the CFC program, and I went ahead and signed all the paperwork, got Toyota Credit, and entered into a binding contract.
Yesterday (July 30th) I received a call from my salesman, Lupe Hernandez. He said that since my registration lapsed in April 2009 on the truck, that they would not be able to do the CFC program (back on July 6th, the CFC program stipulated you only needed to own the vehicle for at least a year, with current insurance). I told him that I needed to go into their dealership anyohow, as my temporary tag had expired on July 28th, and was still waiting on my permanent plates.
I went into the dealership with my wife and two kids that afternoon. Lupe introduced me to Alex Chapa (supervisor), who sat down and said I would need to turn the car back in, as my registration on the truck had lapsed. He gave me two options, one being getting my truck back and turning in the car, or using the truck as a trade in on another car or refinancing the Corolla I bought, but without the $4500 in CFC rebates. Mind you, Champion Toyota has my truck sitting out along the access road, with a big sign painted right on the vehicle stating "I got $4500". Alex said they would not remove the paint, or any damage to the truck since they have had it. I refused, said I am keeping the car, told them they were Breaching the Contract, and demanded they give me my tags for the car. They refused to give me my tags that I have bought and paid for, stating that until this CFC problem is worked out, they would not let me have my tags. Further, they have not even registered my new car with the DMV so I can receive my tags.
Anyhow, I am at a loss as to what to do next. Champion Toyota is breaching the contract they had made up for me on July 6th. I have paid for 6 months of auto insurance on my new car through Geico (over $230). Champion Toyota is refusing to give me my plates, or even an extension on my temporary tags, even though I have paid for them (I have even received my payment notification from Toyota). I took video and pictures of my truck they basically destroyed. THESE CROOKS MUST BE STOPPED!!! -

After watching this a few times, I have determined that my comments are quite ignorant, don't let my remarks sway your judgment, I was VERY PISSED about having to blow this car up! The owner was not a dumbass, my brain was BOILING with all kinds of hateful thoughts because of this program. I still blame the Gov't as a whole. This is a car enthusiast's worst nightmare.
I don't know how I can ever trust these bureaucrats with health care when they approve of a program like this.

I wanted to buy it a few years back but they were asking too much. And I sure can't compete with CARS now...
As you can see, it's no clunker. It's got power everything, including a heated power rear window. It has 154,438 and 4/10ths miles on the clock. A little shampoo and a wash would have it looking new again.
There is a very, very distant chance that I might be able to save it. Whatever the case, I asked the owner if I could photograph the heck out of it.
