    Brahms / Bruno-Leonardo Gelber, 1966: Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15 - Complete

    by davidhertzberg 7,846 views

In this 1966 recording (winner of the 1966 Grand Prix Du Disque), Argentine pianist Bruno-Leonardo Gelber (1941) performs the Brahms Piano Concerto in D minor, Op. 15. Franz Paul Decker (1923) leads the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. This recording -- made when Gelber was 25 years old -- was distributed on cassette tape in 1976 on the Connisseur Society label, serial number CS 2102. With the exception of those of Brahms (which show him when he was about 25 or 26 years old) and the fragments from the orchestral score, as well as the 1966 magazine story (at 36:25) on the Grand Prix Du Disque for this LP, all images used to create this video came from the cassette (5:18, 36:15) and the cassette cover (5:08). This video concludes with an image of Brahms' grave at the Zentralfriedhof in Vienna (47:45).

    Movement 1: Maestoso
    Movement 2: Adagio (21:53)
Movement 3: Rondo (allegro non troppo) (36:02)

Earlier this year I uploaded this performance in 7 segments. The relaxation by YouTube of its time constraints now permits me to present this remarkable performance in its entirety.

Tchaikovsky / Arthur Grumiaux, 1960: Violin Concerto in D, Op. 35 - Complete

    by davidhertzberg 32,802 views

In this 1960 recording, thirty-nine year old Belgian violinist Arthur Grumiaux (1921-1986) performs the Tchaikovsky violin concerto in D, Op. 35. Bernard Haitink conducts the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. This video was developed from a cassette that I purchased in the late 1970s, manufactured by Philips (Serial number 7311 067; corresponding LP, 6527 067). I had previously uploaded this recording in four separate segments.

Grumiaux recorded Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto for Philips three times: in October and November 1956 with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra; in May 1960 with Haitink and the Concertgebouw Orchestra; and in September 1975 with Krenz and the New Philharmonia.

Images from the cassette cover are interspersed throughout the video; images of the actual case that hold the cassette, as well as related images, are at the video close.

    Movement 1: Allegro moderato
    Movement 2: Canzonetta (Andante) (17:09)
Movement 3: Finale: Allegro vivacissimo (23:22)

Mendelssohn / Igor Oistrakh, 1955: Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64 - Complete

    by davidhertzberg 3,901 views

Igor Oistrakh (in his early twenties) is soloist in this performance, which dates to 1955/56, of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64. Franz Konwitschny (1901-1962) conducts the Leipzig Gewandhaus Chamber Orchestra. I created this video with music from the LP pictured above, issued in the USA in 1956 on the Decca label, serial number DL 9842.

    Movement 1: Allegro molto appassionato
    Movement 2: Andante (11:54)
Movement 3: Allegretto non troppo - Allegro molto vivace (19:16)

This recording was produced by VEB Lied der Zeit-Schallplatten, a music publishing house owned and administered by the East German government from the early 1950s through the 1980s. This performance was recorded by Deutsche Grammophon.

Earlier this year I uploaded the first movement of this work; YouTube's new extension of time limits allows me now to present the entire performance, uninterrupted, the way Mendelssohn intended it. So that there is no question in the mind of the listener, I rely principally on images of the LP (8:16) and LP jacket in order to document the authenticity of historically important recordings such as these.

Tchaikovsky / Robert Irving, NYC Ballet Orchestra, 1959: Nutcracker, Suites 1 & 2, Complete

    by davidhertzberg 18,415 views

In this 1959 recording, the late English conductor Robert Irving (1913-1991) leads the New York City Ballet Orchestra in a performance of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, Suites 1 and 2. I created this video from the LP that is shown above, issued on the Kapp label in 1960, serial number 9048. Maestro Irving was music director for the NYC Ballet from 1959 through 1989.

I'd like to thank Earl Carlyss, former concertmaster of the NYC Ballet Orchestra and violinist with the Juilliard String Quartet (1966-1986), for making his personal copy of this extremely rare and extraordinary LP available to me to produce this video.

To preserve the depth of sound that was available to recording engineers at the time this LP was pressed some 50 years ago, I did not use any software to adjust the audio quality to remove small noises and distortion.

So that no questions arise in the listeners' mind as to the provenance of this and similarly rare and historical recordings, I rely for images on the LP label (3:43, 30:57) and jacket, front (15:20) and reverse.

Igor Oistrakh (in his early twenties) is soloist in this performance, which dates to 1955/56, of the Violin concerto in D minor, Op. 22, by Polish violinist Henryk Wieniawski (1835-1880). Franz Konwitschny (1901-1962) conducts the Leipzig Gewandhaus Chamber Orchestra. I created this video with music from the LP pictured above, issued in the USA in 1956 on the Decca label, serial number DL 9842.

    ---------------------------------------------------
W relacjach często opisywano go jako "poetę skrzypiec". Dzięki Wieniawskiemu do europejskiej literatury skrzypcowej wszedł polonez. Wśród kilku takich utworów dwa znalazły stałe miejsce w repertuarze: Polonez D-dur op. 4 i Polonez A-dur op. 21.

In this extremely rare recording from the early 1960s, German baritone Hermann Prey (1929-1998) performs Auf Dem Wasser Zu Singen ("In the middle of the shimmer of the reflecting waves"), D. 774, written by Friedrich Leopold, Graf zu Stolberg-Stolberg (1750-1819) and set to music by Franz Schubert in 1823. The late American pianist Leonard Hokanson (1931-2003) accompanies. I created this video from the cassette shown above, issued in 1974 on the Philips label, serial number 7314 010. The recording predates by at least ten years the manufacture of the cassette.

Mitten im Schimmer der spiegelnden Wellen
Gleitet, wie Schwäne, der wankende Kahn:
Ach, auf der Freude sanftschimmernden Wellen
    Gleitet die Seele dahin wie der Kahn;

    Winket uns freundlich der rötliche Schein;
Unter den Zweigen des östlichen Haines
    Säuselt der Kalmus im rötlichen Schein;
Freude des Himmels und Ruhe des Haines
Atmet die Seel im errötenden Schein.

Ach, es entschwindet mit tauigem Flügel
    Mir auf den wiegenden Wellen die Zeit;
    Morgen entschwinde mit schimmerndem Flügel
Wieder wie gestern und heute die Zeit,
Bis ich auf höherem strahlendem Flügel
    Selber entschwinde der wechselnden Zeit.

Schubert / Hermann Prey, 1960s: An Schwager Kronos, D. 369 - Karl Engel, piano - Lyrics

In this recording from the early 1960s, German baritone Hermann Prey (1929-1998) performs "An Schwager Kronos" (To Coachman Kronos) written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and set to music by Franz Schubert in 1816. The late Swiss pianist Karl Engel accompanies. I created this video from the cassette shown above, issued in 1974 on the Philips label, serial number 7314 010. Spute dich, Kronos!
    Fort den rasselnden Trott!
    Bergab gleitet der Weg;
    Ekles Schwindeln zögert
Mir vor die Stirne dein Zaudern.
    Frisch, holpert es gleich,
Über Stock und Steine den Trott
    Rasch ins Leben hinein!

    Nun schon wieder
    Den eratmenden Schritt
    Mühsam berghinauf.
    Auf denn, nicht träge denn,
    Strebend und hoffend hinan!

    Weit, hoch, herrlich [der Blick
    Rings]1 ins Leben hinein,
    Vom Gebirg zum Gebirg
    Schwebet der ewige Geist,
    Ewigen Lebens ahndevoll.

    Seitwärts des Überdachs Schatten
    Zieht dich an
    Und ein Frischung verheißender Blick
Auf der Schwelle des Mädchens da.
Labe dich! - Mir auch, Mädchen,
    Diesen schäumenden Trank,
    Diesen frischen Gesundheitsblick!

    Ab denn, rascher hinab!
    Sieh, die Sonne sinkt!
Eh sie sinkt, eh mich Greisen
    Ergreift im Moore Nebelduft,
    Entzahnte Kiefer schnattern
    Und das schlotternde Gebein,

    Trunken vom letzten Strahl
    Reiß mich, ein Feuermeer
    Mir im schäumenden Aug,
    Mich geblendeten Taumelnden
    In der Hölle nächtliches Tor.

    Töne, Schwager, ins Horn,
    Rassle den schallenden Trab,
Daß der Orkus vernehme: wir kommen,
    Daß gleich an der Tür
    Der Wirt uns freundlich empfange.

    Lyrics

    Du bist die Ruh,
    Der Friede mild,
    Die Sehnsucht du
    Und was sie stillt.

    You are peace,
    The mild peace,
    You are longing
    And what stills it.

    I consecrate to you
    Full of pleasure and pain
    As a dwelling here
    My eyes and heart.

    Come live with me,
    And close
    quietly behind you
    the gates.

    Drive other pain
    Out of this breast
    May my heart be full
    With your pleasure.

    The tabernacle of my eyes
    by your radiance
    alone is illumined,
    O fill it completely!
    Ich weihe dir
    Voll Lust und Schmerz
    Zur Wohnung hier
    Mein Aug und Herz.

    Kehr ein bei mir,
    Und schließe du
    Still hinter dir
    Die Pforten zu.

    Treib andern Schmerz
    Aus dieser Brust!
    Voll sei dies Herz
    Von deiner Lust.

    Dies Augenzelt
    Von deinem Glanz
    Allein erhellt,
    O füll es ganz!

    Lyrics

    In einem Bächlein helle,
    Da schoß in froher Eil
    Die launige Forelle
    Vorüber wie ein Pfeil.
    Ich stand an dem Gestade
    Und sah in süßer Ruh
    Des muntern Fisches Bade
    Im klaren Bächlein zu.

    Ein Fischer mit der Rute
    Wohl an dem Ufer stand,
    Und sah's mit kaltem Blute,
    Wie sich das Fischlein wand.
    So lang dem Wasser Helle,
    So dacht ich, nicht gebricht,
    So fängt er die Forelle
    Mit seiner Angel nicht.

    Doch plötzlich ward dem Diebe
Die Zeit zu lang. Er macht
    Das Bächlein tückisch trübe,
    Und eh ich es gedacht,
    So zuckte seine Rute,
    Das Fischlein zappelt dran,
    Und ich mit regem Blute
    Sah die Betrogene an.

    Die ihr am goldenen Quelle
    Der sicheren Jugend weilt,
    Denkt doch an die Forelle,
    Seht ihr Gefahr, so eilt!
Meist fehlt ihr nur aus Mangel
    der Klugheit, Mädchen, seht
    Verführer mit der Angel!
    Sonst blutet ihr zu spät!

    Lyrics

Du holde Kunst, in wieviel grauen Stunden,

    Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind;

"Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht?" —
"Siehst, Vater, du den Erlkönig nicht?
Den Erlenkönig mit Kron und Schweif?" —
"Mein Sohn, es ist ein Nebelstreif."

"Du liebes Kind, komm, geh mit mir!
    Gar schöne Spiele spiel' ich mit dir;
Manch' bunte Blumen sind an dem Strand,
Meine Mutter hat manch gülden Gewand." —

Was Erlenkönig mir leise verspricht?" —
    "Sei ruhig, bleibe ruhig, mein Kind;
In dürren Blättern säuselt der Wind." —

"Willst, feiner Knabe, du mit mir gehen?
    Meine Töchter sollen dich warten schön;

    "Ich liebe dich, mich reizt deine schöne Gestalt;
"Mein Vater, mein Vater, jetzt faßt er mich an!
Erlkönig hat mir ein Leids getan!" —

Dem Vater grauset's, er reitet geschwind,
Er hält in Armen das ächzende Kind,
    Erreicht den Hof mit Müh' und Not;
In seinen Armen das Kind war tot.

Schubert / Hermann Prey, 1960s: Ständchen, D.889 - Leonard Hokanson, piano - Lyrics

    by davidhertzberg 6,665 views

In this extremely rare recording from the early 1960s, German baritone Hermann Prey (1929-1998) performs Ständchen, D.889. The late American pianist Leonard Hokanson (1931-2003) accompanies. I created this video from the cassette shown above, issued in 1974 on the Philips label, serial number 7314 010. The recording predates by at least ten years the manufacture of the cassette.

Horch, horch, die Lerch' im Ätherblau!
    Und Phöbus, neu erweckt,
Tränkt seine Rosse mit dem Tau,
    Der Blumenkelche deckt.
    Der Ringelblume Knospe schleußt
    Die goldnen Äuglein auf;
Mit allem, was da reizend ist,
    Da süße Maid, steh auf!

    ...................................

    by davidhertzberg 1,082 views

The late Austrian conductor Franz Bauer-Theussl (1928-2010) leads the Orchestra of the Vienna Volksoper in this recording, which I believe dates to the early 1970s, of Carl Maria von Weber's "Invitation to the Dance," Op. 65, as orchestrated by Hector Berlioz. I created this video from the cassette that you see above (shown near the conclusion), issued sometime in the mid-1970s by Philips as a demonstration recording of their various digital offerings.

Franz Bauer-Theussl (* 25. September 1928 in Zillingdorf; † 30.

Schubert / Hermann Prey, 1960s: Der Kreuzzug, D. 932 - Leonard Hokanson, piano - Lyrics

    by davidhertzberg 594 views

In this extremely rare recording from the early 1960s, German baritone Hermann Prey (1929-1998) performs Romanze, D. 797, penned by Karl Gottfried von Leitner (1800-1890). The American pianist leonard Hokanson accompanies. I created this video from the cassette shown above, issued in 1974 on the Philips label, serial number 7314 010. The recording predates by at least ten years the manufacture of the cassette.

Ein Münich steht in seiner Zell'
    Am Fenstergitter grau,
    Viel Rittersleut in Waffen hell,
    Die reiten durch die Au.

    Sie singen Lieder frommer Art
    In schönem, ernsten Chor,
    Inmitten fliegt, von Seide zart,
    Die Kreuzesfahn' empor.

    Sie steigen an dem Seegestad
    Das hohe Schiff hinan.
Es läuft hinweg auf grünem Pfad,
Ist bald nur wie ein Schwan.

Der Münich steht am Fenster noch,
    Schaut ihnen nach hinaus:
,,Ich bin, wie ihr, ein Pilger doch,
Und bleib ich gleich zu Haus.

    Des Lebens Fahrt durch Wellentrug
    Und heißen Wüstensand,
Es ist ja auch ein Kreuzeszug
    In das gelobte Land.``

Schubert / Hermann Prey, 1960s: Der Musensohn, D. 764 - Karl Engel, piano - Lyrics

    by davidhertzberg 2,179 views

In this recording from the early 1960s, German baritone Hermann Prey (1929-1998) performs "Der Musensohn," D. 764, written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and set to music by Franz Schubert in 1822. The late Swiss pianist Karl Engel accompanies. I created this video from the cassette shown above, issued in 1974 on the Philips label, serial number 7314 010. The recording predates by at least ten years the manufacture of the cassette.

Durch Feld und Wald zu schweifen,
    Mein Liedchen wegzupfeifen,
So geht's von Ort zu Ort!
    Und nach dem Takte reget
    Und nach dem Maß beweget
    Sich alles an mir fort.

    Ich kann sie kaum erwarten,
    Die erste Blum' im Garten,
    Die erste Blüt' am Baum.
    Sie grüßen meine Lieder,
    Und kommt der Winter wieder,
    Sing ich noch jenen Traum.

Ich sing ihn in der Weite,
    Auf Eises Läng' und Breite,
    Da blüht der Winter schön!
    Auch diese Blüte schwindet,
    Und neue Freude findet
    Sich auf bebauten Höhn.

Denn wie ich bei der Linde
    Das junge Völkchen finde,
    Sogleich erreg ich sie.
    Der stumpfe Bursche bläht sich,
    Das steife Mädchen dreht sich
    Nach meiner Melodie.

    Ihr gebt den Sohlen Flügel
Und treibt durch Tal und Hügel
    Den Liebling weit von Haus.
    Ihr lieben, holden Musen,
Wann ruh ich ihr am Busen
    Auch endlich wieder aus?

Sixty-nine year old Wilhelm Backhaus (1884-1969) is soloist in this performance, recorded in June, 1953 at the Großer Musikvereinssaal, Vienna, of the Brahms Piano Concerto in D minor, Op. 15. Karl Böhm conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. I created this video from the LP depicted in the video above, issued on the London label, serial number LL 911. All images in this video were taken from the LP label (4:44, 31:50) and the LP jacket (19:13), with the exception of those of Brahms and the May, 1954, Billboard magazine advertisement for the LP (33:37). Piano score fragments (3:31, 18:40, 31:37, 41:11) are from the public domain. This video concludes with an image of Brahms grave at Zentralfriedhof in Vienna; he is laid to rest next to Johan Strauss, Jr., a composer of whom Brahms was a great admirer.
