    Lebanese Student Organization - Zaffeh

    by OhioStateGlobal 5,269 views

Cultural performance by Lebanese Student Organization. Whether simple or grand, a Lebanese wedding wouldnt be truly Lebanese without a zaffeh. Zaffeh is Arabic for the act of escorting the bride to her husband in celebration of their holy marriage. A wedding in the village, though simple, is one in which everybody takes part. In many villages, celebrations go on for three consecutive days. On the third day, the groom is escorted by a group of dancers, as they play music, sing and dance on their way to the brides house. This is when the zaffeh really takes place.Joined by family members, friends andneighbours, the groom makes his way up to his brides house. As the bride and groom make their way out, women give them their blessings, not to forget the AhWeeeee-ha, and the zalghouta, a very quick joyous sound. Young boys and girls shower the newly weds with flower petals and rice as a sign of happiness.

Hellenic Association - Pentozali and Hassapiko

    by OhioStateGlobal 8,162 views

The Hellenic Student Association performs Pentozali and Hassapiko. The first dance is performed to the tune of Hassapiko, probably the most famous Greek tune, which was made even more popular by the movie Zorba the Greek. The instrument used is called a bouzouki. The second dance of the Pentozali is historically a war dance performed in the island of Crete during the Turkish occupation. The students will be performing a remix of this dance. Greek dances are very intertwined in both modern and classical Greek culture. Greek music and dance was the greatest form of expression in the post-WWII era. Greeks living in Asia Minor and Turkey were deported from their homes and forced to move to Greece. These immigrants sang of their pain of lost homes and loved ones developing the music called Rebetika.
