Workshop video & dance for students of ENAV (National School for Visual Arts) in Maputo and dancers of Maputo -Directed by Walter Verdin

VIDEO DANCE WORKSHOP WALTER VERDIN IN ENAV

The content of the workshop:

Theoretical:
- What is video : technical specifications
- An introduction to Apple Macintosh computers
- The relation of video (2D recorded reality) and dance (3D reality)
- The principals of video editing on Final Cut

Exercises:

1. Long shot + close ups for the visual art students (V)

- in groups every participant should film a long shot and 3 different close ups of this long shot. And a shot of an object of his/her favorite color.
- the visual art students learned to make a simple editing with these basic shots

choose in and out point for the long shot
put it on the timeline
insert the 3 close ups in carefully chosen moments in the long shot

2. Solo's for the dancers (D)

- the dancers worked on three different solo's
1. stay with the feet at the same place
2. dance on a line of 5 meters
3. move through a triangular space
- they showed the work to each other, and it was recorded on video

3. Solo's and duo's (V+D)

The participants were divided in four new groups of 4 V's and 2 D's. In the meantime, some dancers expressed the will of working as a video maker and not dancing during this workshop.

The Ds were asked to make each a solo and combine that solo with his partner D, in the way that there were simultaneous movements in the duo.

Each V filmed two Ds and a duo of these two Ds. In three different locations, choosen in consultation.

The editing should combine the images of the different dances in the different locations.

Apart from the editing work, we concentrate on:
- screening of dance videos and discussing the proces of the making
- (for those who are able to) go more detailed into the program of Final Cut
- compressing movies and putting them on the internet
- shooting dance with different cameras and show it live on stage with video projectors
- finally, every participant will be asked to make his/her own small project to show to public, the videomakers as well as the dancers
